Maybe we should see how many kids of NHL players we can get. Kapanen, Domi... Tkachuks next?

Penguins just announced Todd Rierden and Mike Vellucci are assistant coaches with the Penguins. Not surprised with either. Rierden is a PP guy who had success here and Vellucci is Rutherford's man.

Hopefully this puts some pressure on Sullivan. I dont know if I see either Rierden/Vellucci as pure "Yes Men", but I dont see them engaging with Sully in the way he probably needs to. However, there are now two NHL coaches that could take Sullivan's job if he doesnt perform. Hopefully that puts some heat on Sullivan to make better decisions.

Todd Rierden is back. Usually when no brainer hire options happen I tend to assume it won’t happen because it makes too much sense.

I’d be surprised if Letang is moved, I don’t buy that.

Good news about Reirden

Aho would despise playing with Laine. The guy is an absolute black hole, once the puck goes to him, his line-mates never see it again. Hey may be a capable 40 goal scorer, but there is not a player in the NHL with more deficiencies then him. Last season the Jets had a good year, and just 2 players on the entire team were a minus (i know it is a very weak stat but.....) Laine was a -24. For a guy to stand out that much in that category is tough. Clearly every line he was shuffled between failed heavily at 5v5. Then you just watch him play and it makes sense. A PP specialist for sure, but Aho would be forced to sacrifice a ton of offence if Laine were on his line. This year saw serious improvement, but nowhere near enough.

Bingo,
Laine-Aho-Teravainen
Svechnikov-Trocheck-Necas

to make this happen what are you realistically giving us? Is Necas a center?

can we trade for Hamilton with an extension? or Pesce? would you include Suzuki?

what's your offer? there probably is a deal to be made here for these two teams.

I mean, what kinda twisted f'n irony is it that the Pens have the worst injury luck and are usually at the top of highest man games lost each season, and Jack f'n Johnson is pretty much their iron man hahaha

So, when Sullivan flames out next spring who takes over? Reirden who has the NHL experience as a head coach or Vellucci who brings a new voice to the organization?

Laine is still young you gotta work with him. Goal scoring like that doesn't grow on trees. When he's going he's up there with Ovi in straight up dangerous shots. He's capable of 50 goal seasons.

Agree these really were the 2 names that made sense. I have no idea how they all interact and whether either offers pushback.

It's usually good for AHL players when their coach gets promoted because they have more of a history and confidence in them. We saw it with Sully in the Pens first Cup run. Nobody was screaming for Rust, Sheary, Kuhnhackl, and Wilson and he was willing to give Murray his shot. I feel this will be great for POJ because Vellucci played him a ton over vet options and probably helps fringe guys like Angelo and Miletic when they get a chance.

Regardless, nice to get some fresh voices.

Aho loved playing with him in the World Juniors.

All Laine has to do on that line is get open and shoot. Turbo and Aho can handle the defensive side of things.

Reirdon ran the defense which was Martin's territory plus the PP when he was here. Kind of an odd mix. I suppose you can use Vellucci wherever so he gets PK and forwards? Gonchar was a nice extra so I don't think they replace him.

Both as mentioned have been head coaches so I guess they can go wherever.

668710,

For sure. Someone posted here our PP numbers with Reirden. They were great. Washington always seemed to have a great PP with Reirden as well.

Rinosaur,

F no to the Letang for Domi/Petry. Just a hard NO.

I'd keep the core and try to move Hörnqvist, Jacko, Murray and one of Bjugstad or McCann.

hahah I only wanted to give him a fair chance. He failled miserably lol

That said I didn't want to see Schultz go. I always found him a smart player. Wish we could tie him for a couple more years @ a reasonable price.

If anybody can get him to work on both sides of the puck it's Rod Brind'amour.
